Thomas G. Wiggans   |   Dermira, Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Prior to founding Dermira in 2010, Tom was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Peplin, Inc., acquired in 2009 by LEO Pharma A/S. In 1994, he joined Connetics Corporation as its first Chief Executive Officer, and served in that capacity until to 2006 when Connetics was acquired by Stiefel Laboratories, now a GSK Company. During his tenure Connetics grew into one of the premier dermatology companies in the U.S., with five marketed products and approximately $200 million in revenue. Prior to Connetics, Tom spent twelve years with the Ares-Serono Group in various management positions including President of its U.S. pharmaceutical operations and Managing Director of its U.K. pharmaceutical operations. He began his career with Eli Lilly and Company.

Tom also serves as the Chairman of the Biotechnology Institute, a non-profit educational organization, and Chairman of the Board of Excaliard Pharmaceuticals. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Sangamo BioSciences, Somaxon Pharmaceuticals and Lithera, Inc. Tom received his B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Kansas, and his M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University.

Eugene A. Bauer, MD   |   Dermira, Founder & Chief Medical Officer

Gene is co-founder, Director and Chief Medical Officer of Dermira. Most recently, Gene was a Director and Chief Medical Officer of Peplin, Inc., which was acquired by LEO Pharma A/S in 2009. He was also a co-founder of Connetics, a publicly-traded biotechnology company that was acquired by Stiefel Laboratories, now a GSK Company, in 2006.

Gene is the Lucy Becker Professor, Emeritus, in the School of Medicine at Stanford University, a position he has held since 2002. He served as Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine from 1995 to 2001 and served as Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the Stanford University School of Medicine from 1988 to 1995. During his tenure as department chair, Gene also served as Program Director of the Stanford University General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), where he oversaw the federal and industry-sponsored research carried out in the GCRC. In addition, Gene is a member of the board of directors of Medgenics, Inc., Arbor Vita Corp., Dr. Tattoff, Inc., First Wave Technologies, Inc., Patient Safety Technologies, Inc., and MediSync Bioservices.

Fred Craves   |   Bay City Capital, Investment Partner, Managing Director and Founder

Fred Craves, PhD, is an Investment Partner, Managing Director and Founder of Bay City Capital, and serves as a member of the board of directors and Chairman of the executive committee. Before founding Bay City Capital, he spent over 20 years leading and managing biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Previously, he was Executive Vice President of Schering Berlin and Chief Executive Officer and President of Berlex Biosciences, a research, development, and manufacturing organization. He founded Burrill & Craves, a merchant bank focused on biotechnology and emerging pharmaceutical companies. He was also the founding Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Codon, and co-founder of Creative Biomolecules. Dr. Craves is a member of the boards of directors of F&P Pharmaceuticals, Poniard Pharmaceuticals, Dermira and Madrigal Pharmaceuticals. He also serves as a member of The J. David Gladstone Institutes' Advisory Council and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Dr. Craves earned a BS in Biology from Georgetown University and a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of California, San Francisco.

Wende Hutton   |   Canaan Partners, General Partner

Seasoned healthcare investor Wende Hutton is passionate about identifying, investing in and building companies that are revolutionizing the practice of medicine. She joined Canaan in 2004, bringing diverse expertise from across the entire medical spectrum. Over the last 15 years, Wende has facilitated the market entrance of over 11 novel and lifesaving medical devices, new drugs and diagnostics. Her track record is a testament to her leadership and includes the initial public offerings of five companies, of which two were later acquired, and the acquisition of four more by medical companies including the recent acquisition of BiPar Sciences, a leader in the development of a potential new class of tumor-selective drugs designed to meet the unmet needs of cancer patients. Wende began her venture career at Mayfield Fund in 1993, where she was a General Partner in the life sciences group until 2001. During her tenure at Mayfield, Wende incubated Heartstream Inc. (HPQ) and Northstar Neuroscience Inc. (NSTR), working closely with those founding teams. Most recently, she was a General Partner at Spring Ridge Ventures, a healthcare-focused seed fund. Earlier in her career, Wende held senior operational management positions at GenPharm International and Nellcor in business development and marketing.

In addition to Dermira, Wende sits on the boards of Altheos, Inc., Calibra Medical, ReVision Optics, Inc., Theraclone Sciences and Transcend Medical, Inc. Her previous board seats include Alsius (ALUS) , Apieron, Inc. (Acquired by Aerocrine), BiPar Sciences (acquired by Sanofi-aventis), Heartstream, Inc. (acquired by Hewlett Packard), Micro Therapeutics, Inc. (acquired by ev3, Inc.), Northstar Neuroscience (NSTR), Orquest, Inc. (acquired by Johnson & Johnson), and SenoRx, Inc. (acquired by C. R. Bard).

Wende holds an AB in human biology from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where she was a Baker Scholar. She is active with several community service groups including serving on the board of FACE AIDS and in leadership roles with the National Charity League Stanford chapter. Beyond her community service involvements, Wende's first love is a field biology hike or lecture.

Jake Nunn   |   NEA, Partner

Jake joined NEA in 2006 as a Partner. He focuses on later-stage specialty pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical device investments. In addition to Dermira, Jake is a director of Aciex Therapeutics, Hyperion Therapeutics, Transcept Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: TSPT), and TriVascular. Jake worked at MPM Capital as a Partner with the MPM BioEquities Fund, where he specialized in public, PIPE and mezzanine-stage life sciences investing. Previously, he was a healthcare research analyst and portfolio manager at Franklin Templeton Investments. Jake was also an investment banker with Alex. Brown & Sons. He received an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and an AB in Economics from Dartmouth College. Jake holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, and is a member of the CFA Society of San Francisco.
